Test and fix Main Relay

Postby AnimaLector » Thu Feb 12, 2004 10:06 am

Often intermittent starting problems on hot days can be caused by a faulty main relay

The main relay is screwed to the top left of the fuse box.
Remove the outer casing and inspect for cracked solder joints (dry joints).  Even though there may be no visible dry joints some may still need attention.

It would be good to have:
Soldering Iron
Good quality solder
Solder sucker or Solder removal tape
PCB cleaner / solvent (Jaycar, electrical outlet)
Multimeter

remove the old solder (as much as possible) and clean the board with the solvent.  Re Solder all of the joints.

TESTING
the pins should be numbered.  Attach the pins to the battery and ground as described and use the multimeter to test for continuity.
-----------------------------------------------------
Pin 4  +12V
Pin 8  GND
Continuity between 5 & 7
-----------------------------------------------------
Pin 5 +12V
Pin 2 GND
Continuity between 1 & 3
-----------------------------------------------------
Pin 3 +12V
Pin 8 GND
Continuity between 5 & 7
-----------------------------------------------------
If all these tests are good.. it will be a different problem such as coil, dizzy or possibly wiring harness.
