Found some reasonably priced bumpstops. Just did some force testing on them and they are nice and progressive. May have to trim them a bit for your application that turbocab.

Here is a picture showing the stuff inside a strut. Its all held in by a crimped over edge under the goldy coloured cap thing.

See below for more fixed steady work.

OK so a bit more info on the fixed steady:

I have been making it over the last couple of days so I can do the required internal work the strut casings. Making internal circlip grooves and the such.

Image

The parts were milled on the CNC mill at uni and in this pic are sitting on the lathe ways ready to be screwed together and various other holes put in them.

Image

Drilling the hole on the bottom of the screwed together plates, turned the lathe into a mill temporarily  Worked freaking awesome actually. The rulers made perfect shims to get it to exactly the right height.

Image

All mounted up, sealed bearings on the end of the fingers to contact the workpiece. The screw to pull it down onto the ways from underneath is a wheel bolt from a new Mini, turned the tapered shoulder down into a parallel one that locats in a bit of 20mm round bar, then the thread is threaded into the bottom of steady itself.

Image

Image

The thing in the end of the strut is a welded up seal nut with a hole drilled in the center. I can put this in the end of the strut and put the center from the tailstock in there and it immediately holds the strut straight, then I can tighten up the steady to hold the strut, and then remove the center bung (has an m6 thread in the hole for removal) and the tailstock for access to the inside of the strut.

Image

Strut mounted up ready for work on the inside to commence.

SO now after all the dicking around to make that, I can actually get back to working on struts!

Also I have updated the original post with a bit more information.

CHeers man.

Just finished making a spring seat. Came out pretty nice.

Image

Spring seat and blank. The blank is just the center I milled out of the fixed steady.

Image

Showing the deatil of the finish, pretty nice!

Image

Recessed shoulder that slips over the circlip and stops it being able to climb out of the groove entirely.

If you cut the outer tube 100mm down from the top and send everything but the long bit of outer tube that would be great. The crimp on the top will keep all the bearing and seal parts in one piece.

I've been staying with the Mrs over the last week too so I havn't got much done, will be motoring it this week tho.

Yeah that would be good actually. I have used one of the pairs of T2 struts Alex gave me so far so replacing those would be good.

:o Well done!!

Damn thats a bit steep, still probably cheaper than me buying some struts from any wreckers or anything over here tho, if they had any.

Got the struts, I meant you could do the same thing to the fronts as the rears and just send the guts, oh well

They are sceduled in for being made next week. Will be making the internal grooving tool on monday, making struts in the days after that. So much associated stuff to co-ordinate in making these, doesn't help Im flat broke.
