Engine Choking?

Postby zakheron » Mon Sep 20, 2010 1:33 pm

I have an issue when sometimes the engine will start perfectly and drive fine. Then the next time It starts but as I drive off it seems to choke and rev's very rough, and won't accelerate properly, Like its not getting something.

Also the fan works but its doesn't seem to turn on like its not being told when to start up, my brother thinks I should hard wire it to the battery and run a switch to the dash?

Lastly does anybody have a soundtrack of there city turbo one running. I am curious as to how they sound because mine sounds a little strange. Almost like a diesel, I was wondering if this is right or very wrong.

The fan will be a busted thermoswitch that goes in the radiator, extremely common, repco has replacements.

The choking sounds like a loose electrical connection to me, check your ecu for lights straight after.

City turbo should purr, http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RJ71A8AK , thats one from japan I downloaded ages ago.

Thanks for the help.
Any idea on price for a new thermo switch?
Yeah mine sounds pretty much like this, Its just under the bonnet where its a little noisy.
It seems to run normally with lights 1 and 2 on.
then when it does the choking it shows 1, 2 and 4

Around 35-40 for the switch from memory.

1,2 is a Map sensor problem, not good, you should trace that down.

1,2,4 is a throttle body sensor problem which explains your bogging, car won't know what to do with the fuel, probably a wiring issue.

So how would you recommend going about finding an fixing these issues?
The bogging only happens sometimes, is this wierd if its a wiring issue?
Would it entail that its a short rather wired wrong?
Sorry for all the questions just trying to get its sorted!
Any idea on sale prices for these lately? ( the whole car)

Just took it for a quick drive and realised my ecu is mounted upside down the code is actually 2 + 4 thats always on and then when it bogs down its 2 + 4 + 8

OK, 2-4 is the water temp sensor, will be running rich because of that, its a two pin plug by the distributer.

2-4-8 is an ECU error code, maybe get hold of another ECU, shouldn't be too hard to find.

Wrong again, it is upside down but i was reading it right. Its 1+2+4 which you say is the throttle sensor. It happened a few times today and when I put my foot flat and then turn the car on it seems to work every time but then if I don't it randomly show's code 7 not every time and usually when the car is warm

The intermittent nature of your throttle position sensor problem would lead me to believe that it is a wiring issue, a lose wire somewhere, especially if any wires were cut and joined in fitting the engine to your car.

Also no idea how much those sell for, havn't been looking.

So got a new thermo fan switch from repco and put it in. still doesn't seem to want to turn on the fan.
I connected the two wires together and it goes but when I attach them to the switch when its hot it doesn't switch on. Any ideas?
Cheers for the other info

Check the switch turns on in a pot of hot water (boil it), I think Repco has sold me a bung one before.

How much was the switch?

Using a multi-meter. Can get them for like $10.
