Mufflers/exhaust systems.
Mufflers/exhaust systems.
I am doing some serious thinking about what sort of exhaust my T2 engine will be getting as soon as i can find some $$$ and I was wondering what other forum people are using. Currently I am thinking a dump pipe rather like TURBO3 's but going into 3 inch the whole way down. Single straight through muffler, but I really have no idea which. What would you guys recomend (looking at a $200 or less price on the muffler) ???
Re: Mufflers/exhaust systems.
2.5 inch straight pipe mandrel bend off turbo should sound nice and budgetable.

Re: Mufflers/exhaust systems.
The other option of course being to make a muffler....anyone tried THAT before? Bit of 7 inch stainless pipe, bit of 3 inch perforated, few circles and a load of fiberglass and stainless steel wool. Do-able? ? ? Sounds fun at least

Re: Mufflers/exhaust systems.
If its not a turbo city i wouldnt go too much bigger than the factory pipe.
NA cars like some back pressure in the exhaust to work properly, whereas turbos cars are the opposite..

Re: Mufflers/exhaust systems.
Ive seen that happen time and time again....
With no back pressure on a NA they basicly loose power and dont go as well..
On http://www.nzhondas.co.nz there is some good coverage on this topic.
In the tech section?
Do a search there anyway
There wernt even reccomending 2 1/2" on a 1600vtec from memory!
There are different thoughts on this but the local muffler shop i spent a lot of time out pretty much tried this and found out it does the whole loose power thing....
Cheers

Re: Mufflers/exhaust systems.
yeah give it some big muff at the back for sure!
I reckon 2" should be ok from the front joint back?
Ive never tinkered with the exhaust on a city much before.
about to build a complete system turbo back though!
Also, remember turbo cars are A LOT quieter with big exhaust's compared to NA cars.
Turbos act like a kind of muffler.
-just keep this in mind as well.

Re: Mufflers/exhaust systems.
Folding up a cone from sheet steel will be the cheapest. Just draw out a net for it, cut it out, shape it round something (wooden cone perhaps?) weld it up at the other end. Bit of practice should see you right.
I supose you could go on a trip down to the nearest fabrication place and get them to weld one up. Shouldn't be too expensive i dont think...
